Nitin Patel, Ph.D.

Dr. Nitin Patel, Founder, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer at Cytel, is a widely respected expert in developing fast and accurate computer algorithms to implement computationally intensive statistical methods.

Dr. Patel is primarily engaged in researching and developing new clinical trial simulation and modeling tools for better decision-making at pharmaceuticals and device companies. His Bayesian statistic dose-finding and computation methodology breakthroughs resulted in an FDA CRADA award to develop much needed software for adaptive trials. He also uses simulations to plan drug supply of complex trials, in randomization schemes, and predicting a program's Net Present Value and its ramifications on clinical strategy decision-making.

Dr. Patel has published over 70 refereed papers in statistics, operations research and computing, and co-authored a book on data mining for end-users. Along with co-authors Dr. Cyrus Mehta and Dr. Karim Hirji, he received the 1987 George W. Snedecor Award from the American Statistical Association. Dr. Patel is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.

Dr. Patel has been with Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a visiting professor since 1995. Previously, he was a CMC chair professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and held positions at Harvard University, the University of Michigan, the University of Montreal, and the University of Pittsburgh. He won India's Vikram Sarabhai Medal for systems analysis research in 1985, served as President of the Operations Research Society, Vice President of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies, and is a Fellow of the India Computer Society. Dr. Nitin Patel holds an Operations Research Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
